Week 2 Tutorial: Jimdo

For this week's tutorial, we're playing with the website Jimdo, which allows you to create a website for free. My website is here  ( ̄∀ ̄)

Some thoughts...mostly just tired rambling
  • Moving elements like headings and text is done with a click and drag mechanism, which is very easy. There's also a special 'space' that allows you to drop elements in and 'save' them for later
  • There are quite a few tasteful presets for header and background (subtle background patterns are possible!) The editor also lets you crop your own header images through the system, which saves the hassle of tinkering with a photo editor to get the dimensions right
  • The presets are very restrictive, especially for fonts and links (I can't choose a different colour for hover/visited links)
  • For some reason, there isn't a box preview of the colour selection as you drag the selector around the wheel - you have to select the colour and see the change on the preview...)
  • The preview opens automatically after you make any changes, which can be easy to forget. If you forget to confirm you want to save the changes, you lose the changes, which is pretty annoying
  • The 'edit' option for every element of the page (headings, textbox, pictures etc.) pops up every time you hover over the relevant element in editing mode. I mean, it's convenient because you know exactly what element you're editing, but sometimes I want to click something else and the boxes pop up (the 'edit navigation' button pops up every time I move my mouse in the general direction of the toolbar, which made it difficult to edit the headers at the top of the page). The option to edit should be more discreet and less 'in your face'
  • The window containing all the style changing options vanishes after every change  and you have to keep clicking back to change each element
  • I have no idea how to make a box around the body text using the preexisting editing tools. Had to refer to a HTML tutorial to make a box around my text for the main page...
  • A lot of the extra features - add ons, statistics and more advanced applications need to be purchased
